Fence repair

A fence with good bones can often be fixed for a lot less than replacing it.

A leaning section, a few broken boards, a hole in the chain link or a loose wire on the pasture fence doesn't always mean a new fence. The question is whether the posts are still sound.

What can usually be repaired?

  • A few rotted posts, replaced or reinforced with steel post brackets
  • Broken, warped or missing boards and pickets
  • Loose or sagging rails
  • Chain link that's been bent by a fallen branch or a car, or has come loose from its posts
  • Sagging or broken wire, corner braces and gate hardware on ranch fences

When does replacement make more sense?

If most of the posts are rotted at the ground, if the fence leans along its whole length, or if boards are failing everywhere, patching one section just moves the problem to the next one. A contractor can tell you whether it's worth fixing.

Does repair need a permit?

Inside Missoula city limits, the city requires a fence permit for repairing or replacing 25 feet or more of existing fence. Smaller fixes may not need one, but check before you start. The city says working without a required permit can bring an investigation fee and a fine.

After a storm or snow load

If wind or snow knocked a fence down, keep pets and livestock away from loose boards and wire, and take photos for your insurer before cleanup if you plan to file a claim.

Signs it's time to call

  • Posts that move when you push on them
  • A section leaning toward the neighbor's yard or the sidewalk
  • Boards pulling off the rails
  • Gaps under the fence where a dog can get out

The contractor prices the job after walking the fence line, checking the ground, the slope and any gates, and hearing what the fence needs to do. We don't quote prices, and a number given over the phone before anyone has seen the property is only a ballpark.
